Vadodara, India – A significant milestone in India’s aerospace industry was achieved on October 28, 2024, with the inauguration of the Indian C295 final assembly line (FAL) in Vadodara, Gujarat. This marks the first time Airbus has deployed its entire production system for an aircraft outside its home nations, in partnership with Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL).

A Dream Realized

Samatha Bikumalla, a senior manufacturing engineer at Airbus, expressed her excitement, stating, “Aircraft are critical to nation-building. This is a dream come true.” The C295 program, which involves the delivery of 56 aircraft to the Indian Air Force (IAF), will replace the aging Avro fleet and enhance the IAF’s capabilities across India’s vast territory.

A Technological Leap

The C295 is equipped with an indigenous self-protection suite, including radar warning systems, missile warning sensors, and countermeasure dispenser systems. The industrial ecosystem established in India involves the sourcing of raw materials and the manufacture of over 13,000 detailed parts at various locations, including Nagpur, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. These parts are then assembled into larger components at the Main Component Assembly (MCA) site in Hyderabad before being shipped to the FAL in Vadodara.

State-of-the-Art Production

Airbus has implemented a digital model of the C295, ensuring the highest quality standards. The Vadodara FAL utilizes a Pulse Line setup, similar to automotive assembly lines, to optimize the assembly process.

The first batch of 16 C295 aircraft has been delivered from Airbus’ San Pablo site in Spain, while the remaining 40 will be produced in Vadodara. Additionally, the IAF crews have undergone training at San Pablo, and a new flight simulator will be installed at the Airbus training center in Agra.

A Bright Future for Indian Aerospace

The C295 program is a cornerstone of Airbus’ industrial mission in India, aiming to develop a comprehensive aerospace ecosystem. With India’s burgeoning civil aviation market and the growing demand for military aircraft, this partnership between Airbus and Tata signifies a significant step forward for India’s aerospace and defense sectors.

The first ‘Make in India’ C295 is scheduled to roll out of the Vadodara facility in September 2026, marking another milestone for the Indian aerospace industry.

C295: A Versatile Tactical Transport Aircraft

The Airbus C295 is a medium tactical transport aircraft known for its versatility, reliability, and efficiency. Initially designed and manufactured by the Spanish aerospace company CASA, it’s now part of the Airbus Defence and Space division.

Key Features and Capabilities:

  • Robust Design: Built to withstand harsh conditions and operate from short, unprepared runways.
  • Versatile Missions: Capable of performing a wide range of missions, including:
  • Troop and cargo transport
  • Maritime patrol
  • Airborne early warning and control
  • Medical evacuation
  • Search and rescue
  • Firefighting
  • Advanced Avionics: Equipped with modern avionics systems for enhanced situational awareness and mission effectiveness.
  • Reliable Engines: Powered by Pratt & Whitney Canada PW100 engines, ensuring excellent performance and fuel efficiency.

Indian Air Force’s C295 Acquisition:

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has ordered 56 C295 aircraft, with 16 to be delivered directly from Airbus and the remaining 40 to be manufactured in India by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL). This strategic partnership will boost India’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities and create new job opportunities.

The ‘Make in India’ Initiative:

The C295 project is a significant part of India’s ‘Make in India’ initiative, aimed at promoting domestic manufacturing and reducing reliance on foreign imports. By manufacturing these aircraft in India, the country will not only strengthen its defense capabilities but also develop a skilled workforce and advanced manufacturing technologies.
