Pilots are often the most visible face of aviation. In India, many students dream of flying passenger aircraft for airlines like Air India, IndiGo, Akasa Air, or SpiceJet. But becoming a pilot requires clear education, training, and licensing. This guide explains how students can become pilots in India and what steps they need to take.

Educational Requirements

To become a pilot in India, you must:

  • Complete 10+2 (Class 12) with Physics and Mathematics.
  • If you do not have Physics and Maths, you can take them through NIOS (National Institute of Open Schooling).
  • Keep at least 60% in your 10+2, especially for airline cadet programs like Air India’s.

You must also be at least 18 years old to start your commercial pilot training.

Required Licences

To work as an airline pilot in India, you need:

  • Student Pilot License (SPL) – Minimum age 16 years.
  • Private Pilot License (PPL) – Minimum age 17 years.
  • Commercial Pilot License (CPL) – Minimum age 18 years.
  • Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) – Minimum age 21 years.

For most airlines, the minimum requirement is a CPL with Instrument Rating (IR) and Multi‑Engine Rating.
